Gothic Shadows and Morning Coffee: A Dracula Day Reflection

🦇 Today Is Dracula Day

The legend of the Count originated from an ancient folk tale, and was completed as a novel by Bram Stoker based on the historical facts of Vlad III, and has come to appear on my blog today.

While May 26th is widely known as Memorial Day here in the U.S.,
there’s another, lesser-known title this day carries:
Dracula Day — marking the publication of Bram Stoker’s Dracula on this very date in 1897.

A bit of an odd pairing, isn’t it?
A solemn remembrance day and a celebration of gothic fiction.
But maybe there’s something poetic about honoring both memory and imagination in one breath.

🧛 I’m Not into Horror – Not Even a Little

To be honest…
I can’t handle horror movies.

Sudden screams, shadowy figures, splashes of blood — I close my eyes at the first sign of trouble.

But still, today, I found myself intrigued.
There’s something so compelling about the old 1931 black-and-white Dracula film starring Bela Lugosi.
I’ve never watched it, but the photos alone are mesmerizing.

That sharp tuxedo, the intense gaze,
and the unforgettable line:

“I never drink… wine.”

But still, today, I found myself intrigued.

I’ve never watched it, but the photos alone are mesmerizing.

That sharp tuxedo, the intense gaze,
and the unforgettable line:

Now that’s style. Classic, chilling — but not terrifying.

🕯️ Vampires Aren’t Always Scary

Growing up, I remember people dressing up as Dracula for Halloween.
It used to feel silly. But now I think — maybe there’s more to it.

  • The wish to never die
  • The tragic beauty of night
  • The loneliness behind the legend

It’s not just fear.
It’s drama, longing, and myth woven together in black silk and candlelight.

🖋️ And Today, I Clock In with Haru

The stock market is closed.
The banks are closed.
Even my workplace is quiet today.
But Haru and I? We’re still here — sharing stories, sipping coffee, and writing a little piece of the day into this blog.

Dracula drinks blood.
I prefer my coffee. ☕
And while others sleep in, I hit “publish” with a smile.

May 26th.
A little spooky. A little thoughtful.
And thanks to this blog, a lot more memorable.

May 26 is Dracula Day! A lighthearted reflection on Dracula’s legacy from someone who’s scared of horror movies — but still loves a good gothic story over coffee.
